IntroductionВ

IfВ youВ wereВ toВ lookВ upВ theВ definitionВ ofВ ClinicalВ PsychologyВ youВ wouldВ findВ theВ definitionВ toВ be, В " theВ fieldВ ofВ clinicalВ psychologyВ integratesВ science, В theory, В andВ practiceВ toВ understand, В forecast, В andВ alleviateВ maladjustment, В disability, В andВ discomfortВ asВ wellВ asВ toВ promoteВ humanВ version, В adjustment, В andВ personalВ development. В ClinicalВ psychologyВ focusesВ onВ theВ mental, В emotional, В biological, В psychological, В social, В andВ behavioralВ aspectsВ ofВ humanВ functioningВ acrossВ theВ lifeВ span, В inВ varyingВ cultures, В andВ atВ allВ socioeconomicВ level” (ToddВ & В Bohart, В 1999, В pg. В 5). В InВ myВ philosophyВ IВ doВ believeВ thisВ toВ beВ trueВ amongВ otherВ things. В IВ believeВ theВ BibleВ toВ beВ myВ mainВ sourceВ ofВ truth. В В

ViewВ ofВ HumanВ NatureВ

WithВ anyВ philosophyВ weВ haveВ toВ startВ atВ theВ beginningВ ofВ theВ natureВ ofВ peopleВ andВ theirВ disorders. В WhyВ areВ peopleВ theВ wayВ theyВ are? В IsВ itВ natureВ orВ nurture? В IВ believeВ weВ doВ notВ startВ outВ asВ aВ " blankВ slate. ” WeВ areВ allВ bornВ withВ specificВ genesВ andВ attributesВ thatВ areВ uniqueВ toВ us. В WeВ areВ allВ individualsВ uniqueВ inВ ourВ ownВ ways. В HoweverВ ourВ experiencesВ matureВ andВ shapeВ usВ forВ goodВ orВ forВ bad. В ThinkВ aboutВ lifeВ asВ aВ pokerВ gameВ andВ inВ yourВ handВ areВ theВ cardsВ youВ haveВ beenВ dealt. В YouВ wereВ givenВ theВ cardsВ andВ howВ youВ playВ theВ gameВ orВ yourВ " experiences” determineВ theВ outcome. В MoralityВ andВ valuesВ areВ notВ subjectiveВ setsВ ofВ ideasВ thatВ varyВ fromВ personВ toВ person, В orВ evenВ cultureВ toВ culture. В Rather, В theyВ areВ determinedВ byВ SomeoneВ whoВ isВ aboveВ theВ createdВ realmВ andВ givesВ themВ toВ allВ whomВ areВ created. В ThisВ " Someone” givesВ youВ theВ cards. В WithoutВ beingВ givenВ theseВ basicВ valuesВ andВ moralsВ utterВ chaosВ wouldВ reignВ inВ theВ world. В InВ theВ BibleВ JesusВ saysВ

В

" For out of the heart come evil thoughts,  murders,  adulteries,  fornications,  thefts,  false witness,  slanders. ” (Matthew 15: nineteen,  NASB) This obviously points to the fact that our hearts are the central problem in addressing the behaviors and actions of our lives.  In the Bible we also get a clear picture of the condition of the human being.  Romans 3: 23 says " All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (NASB).  The logical implication is that one who has sinned (defined as a thought,  action upon a thought,  or behavior that is against the character and perfection of God's character) is called a " sinner”.  Because we have all sinned we can not experience the life God intended us to live.  Our sin separates us from God and therefore is the root issue in our lives.  Not every struggle is a result of personal sin though.  If a client were abused,  traumatized,  rejected,  neglected,  etc.,  the sin is not theirs but the results of someone else's sin plays out in their life.  Many people need counseling because of the sins of others,  not just their own.   Our behaviors and actions flow directly from our sinful thoughts,  actions,  and desires.  If someone were to live their life on a deserted island and never have

wouldВ stillВ haveВ theВ propensityВ andВ desireВ toВ beВ greedy, В lustful, В prideful, В andВ otherВ thingsВ thatВ goВ directlyВ againstВ theВ characterВ ofВ God. В SocietyВ andВ ourВ environmentВ doВ notВ determineВ ourВ actionsВ asВ muchВ asВ ourВ ownВ inwardВ distortedВ desires. В TheВ rootВ issueВ isВ aВ heartВ problem, В notВ oneВ ofВ needingВ justВ aВ " behavioralВ adjustment” toВ correctВ theВ actions. В WhenВ clientsВ comeВ toВ counselingВ becauseВ theyВ areВ strugglingВ withВ somethingВ thatВ isВ aВ resultВ ofВ someoneВ else'sВ sinВ theВ directionВ andВ focusВ isВ stillВ onВ theirВ needВ forВ aВ SaviorВ toВ giveВ themВ theВ innerВ abilityВ toВ haveВ theВ strength, В patience, В forgiveness, В andВ healingВ toВ moveВ forwardВ inВ theirВ life.
